this years's esquire 78-word fiction submission:


fight or flight? though santiago never realized it, his situational statistical analysis was much better than the average homie.  13 hits off the foil and the blood trickling from his left ear had muddled his decision making skills.  he was fast, but also had a legendary right cross.  belatedly, fear won out.  he’d been shot before, but this time was different.  legs no longer tree trunk solid. time slowed, tunnel vision creeped.  survival slipped from his vicelike grip.
